Holy Toledo!!! Day 2

So, the next day we woke up to walk around the city. There was a really huge painting of the city in our hotel and its pretty cool. So when we went to start walking around the city we were able to get some really cool pictures. It was a lot of fun. This one was really cool. If any of you have ever learned anything about the Spanish Civil War, this is my Franco tribute. Later, I saw Spencer scaling the hill off in the distance so I decided to follow. I felt like Gimli. It was awesome. I'm the third one running up. When we got to the top we found a couple of dug outs and suspected that this could have very easily been a crucial spot during the Spanish Civil War. A good cannon or tank or sniper could be very effective from this hilltop. To my dismay few people took pictures of us posing up there but it worked out. Here is a where's John-Charles picture for you. Can you find me?Look how awesome this city is! Here is a good portion of our group. The rest of the day was spent soaking in the city once again. It really was an awesome place. I was sad to finally leave but clearly I desfruté. We manditorily made a stop at the pastel place in Sol and ate the most delicious things known to man. From there we went and bought some awesome ties. The day turned out awesome. It was a great week.

Holy Toledo!!! Day 1

OK, so I know that everyone is using that tagline for this trip but I really don't care because I like it. Anyways, this weekend we went to the city of Toledo. It was one of the coolest places I've seen so far. I really liked it. There is a chance that due to my have a party personality I only got 90 minutes of sleep the night before so the train ride was pretty interesting. We took the bullet train and it didn’t really seem like we were speeding like a bullet but I, not being a huge train rider, don’t have much to compare it with and we did, in fact arrive in Toledo rather quickly. When we pulled into the city I was immediately blown away. It was like in Timeline where they are suddenly thrown back 500 years. It was awesome and even the Train station had an armour shop. Dr. Shumway wanted us to all to have the walk up experience that he had had a year earlier so we walked for 30 minutes up hill to our hotel. I'm not complaining, just explaining so that it is understood why I was really worn out that night. It was actually really fun and we got a lot of really good pictures. As we "stormed the city" I tried to put myself into the mindset of the Christians who did the same during the reconquest and the Moors during the invasion centuries earlier. It was really cool to get the whole medieval city feel as we made the hike up. As you can see Trevor and Aaron were our official hike buddies. I really do love those kids.We got to the hotel and left our stuff there so that we could head over to the 3rd largest Cathedral in the world in Toledo. Wow, it was impressive. The story is that way back when in 711 the Moors invaded the Spanish Peninsula. They won everything except the very northernmost part. In 1085 the Christians took it back. It was the Visigoth capital before the Moors and one of the largest and first cities to be reconquested. To make a big deal about it as a symbol for the rest of the long war they built the Cathedral. So, there was a lot of work and money that went into it. Hence, its huge and elaborate. OK, so that is why we went to Toledo. So as I was saying, before even checking in officially we walked over to the Cathedral. On the way we saw that someone had made a cheap knock off of my suit jacket. Some people have no shame. So, as I was saying, again, the Cathedral is immense. From the outside you can see the massive walls were elaborately carved with these awesome designs from the Bible. Later that night I went on the night time tour of Toledo and found out that it is the capital of the satanic churches of the world because of this cathedral. As the story goes, there is one apocryphal writing where it describes the scene of Cain and Able in a different light. Cain is shown as being a very dark creature who kills Able by biting his neck and draining his blood. Satanical groups are known to idealize the Vampire as the perfect being because they thrive in darkness and their life comes from the death of others. Anyways, the Satanists worship this account from the apocrypha. They say that all vampires are descendants of Cain. Here in Toledo the scene of Cain and Able is depicted in the same way. This is only place in the entire world where this idea is depicted. This shows that this Anti-Christ sect has been around since the creation of the Cathedral and already had enough money, power, and influence to get the sculptor to sculpt that scene that specific way. Because of this, in the 1970’s, when some guy from San Francisco decided to proclaim himself the papa negra, he did so in Toledo. So that is how cool I later found these simple carvings to be. If you thought the outside was cool, you should have seen the inside. It was awesome. They had a Goya painting there that was really good and not all to standard of his style. It was obviously painted before he started going depressed and crazy. We couldn't take pictures inside so you'll have to take my word for it. I did however find an awesome shop which sells LOTR merchandise. From there we went to an ancient Jewish synagogue. It was way cool and, although I wasn't completely enthralled by it, we sure had a lot of fun. I found out that the triforce is an ancient Jewish symbol. I had a very artistic photo idea. As Dr. Shumway had pointed out to me, even Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood knew the high quality of Toledo’s swords as demonstrated when the sheriff receives Spanish Steel and then kills someone with it. So off I was in search of my own Spanish Steel. Here is just an idea of how awesome looking this city was. I don't really know what was up with Andrew's face here. The important thing is that we found swords and I felt like Duncan for a moment. (I did, in fact, later find Duncan's sword but pictures weren't easy to take in every store.) We were obviously shopping around so we were trying see as many sword shops as possible, taking advantage of the time to have fun. A couple of the guys wanted to go out with a plan but I decided to let fate and my innate sense of history guide us. We purposefully lost ourselves in one of the world’s most enchanting cities. We found a nunnery which made mazipan. Not to be confused with marzipan, Homestar’s girlfriend. This stuff was delicious. There were a lot of pictures that we had to do timer shots and I was very sad to see that this picture turned out so bad. From there we basically just took every tiny alley we could that seemed to head in the direction we wanted to go. We suddenly found ourselves overlooking an immense view of a cathedral and the surrounding city. I immediately remembered how the city was such a good defensive position because the castle was so high and because the city was a natural maze of streets. As we looked down I could not help but agree. If I had been trying to get to a certain place I never would have found it. But using a bit of reversed logic, I didn’t try to go anywhere and ended up exactly where I wanted to be. A lot of the guys we talked to that night had tried really hard to find the nunnery and really cool scenery and couldn't. We, on the other hand, had the time of our lives. As I was saying, that night we went on a "ghost tour" of the city. It wasn't that scary but it was really interesting. The two guys who were our guides were really cool. It was all in thick Spanish but most of us got by just fine. We didn't ever go in anywhere though and the last couple of stops I had to sit down because I was just to tired to stand still. We ate paella that night and it was really really good. When we finally got back to the hotel I was pretty darn worn out. We decided to watch a movie and I think I got through half of it before falling asleep.

Picasso and Such

So, this last week was pretty cool. Wednesday we were going to go to a movie but at the last minute Erin mentioned that they were going to the Reina Sofia Museum which was the modern art museum of Madrid. So I kinda blew off Andrew but he was ok with it. When we got to Madrid someone wanted to show off the Bus Station so we walked around for a bit and found a slice of Joao Pessoa in the middle of Madrid. From there someone mentioned a cool odd church that closes at 6 so we decided to to that first. It was a lot of fun. Erin and I are probably going to Hell for taking this picture. But anyways, it was starting to become appearent that most Spanish Cathedrals are basically the same. I scared everyone really bad because there was a ledge outside the front of the church that from the steps looked like the egde of a wall but was really just a step down. I stepped up to take a picture and then acted like I slipped and fell backwards. People freaked out and it was really funny. From there was headed over to the museum and on the way I bought Kindra a horse that she will love. It walks around in circles. The guy wanted 10 for it but I walked away and he offered 8. I told him I'd do it for 7 and he agreed but then told me it had to be 8 with a battery. I told him heck no and he got angry but still gave it to me for 7. The Museum was really interesting. The first couple of rooms were just so modern I felt like I needed to sit and meditate. I did and the security came and got mad at me...all part of the experience I guess. A lot of the art was kinda "interesting" Dali and Picasso were perverts. We were looking at some of the odder works and one especially caught our eye. But the more we looked at it the more we noticed little things that got weirder and weirder. Finally Brock pointed out the name of the piece was "El Gran Masturbador" by Salvador Dali. I hadn't realized whose all these works were and suddenly I realized the this was a pretty serious museum. At first I thought it was just some random one. I wasn't really expecting anything that famous there. As I gave another circle around the room to give Dali the attention someone that famous deserved I realized that there was a lot more here than I had originally thought. I don't mean the museum but Spain. I guess the label of it as almost a 3rd world country had given me a false impression that I wasn't going to see anything nice and advanced, just historical. A new wave of realization and excitement came over me.

One room was playing this really weird French movie and we were all really confused by it. Another room had odd modern sculptures. There was a room devoted to a photographer of the Spanish Civil War. From there we walked into what we found to be the Picasso room. I was still just expecting a few not to famous ones and there on the far wall was the famous Guernica. It was huge and awesome with a lot of detail and symbolism. I was floored and impressed and awestruck and any other synonym of those things. I really liked it. Its really cool when you read about something and then finally see it.

On the way out we saw this teeny little dog. In the train/bus/metro station in the rain forest room there were a lot of cool looking turtles. When we arrived in Alcala I walked Brooke home and we went through the mall and I found the midgit door. Thus ended the awesome artzy night.

So here it is

A Relaxed Few Days

Lets see if we can keep Katie appeased. The beggining of the week was pretty relaxed. Well, that would depend on your point of view but i was ok with it. During church Sarah Shumway had a concussion so Dr. and Sister Shumway took her and Timothy to the hospital and asked if I could watch over their kids during church. Nothing too odd since I've been doing that for years now. (Between my two beloved sobrinos and the many crianças of Brazil I'm pretty used to it. Don't worry Katie, my experience stems much more from the crianças than from your children.) Aaron decided it was pretty funny to copy me for a half hour but when I wasn't doing anything he got kinda bored. We all went to the Shumway's and waited for Sister Shumway to show up. She did much sooner than I thought. That night, after a lot of homework and a quick siesta I headed out to meet with the missionaries who were teaching a Brazilian. That was really cool. I could, for the first time in 5 months, perfectly express what I wanted to say. I was able to observe how different each mission is from each other. Mine lying somewhere on the extreme. Monday was a once again chill day. As I mentioned in the Email, the gypsy was out again. You wouldn't know it from the picture but this is the lady who left us a wonderful present last week.We had a lot of reading due for class and I was able to get that done and then we had FHE but we first went to get our cell phone "charged". Due to wonderful Spanish custom it wasn't going to reopen till 5 so we took advantage of the time for a neet picture. In that picture I was listening to Hazel Eyes. Just in case anyone was wondering.
Anyways, from there we just went to FHE and had a fun time. We played UNO and just got to know each other better. I will never play UNO the same after Brazil. It was a very intense and important game there.

Anyways, due to the massive amount of reading that Dr. Shumway had us due Tuesday was looking grim. But then a light shone in the darkness. Garrett suggested that we all go to an awesome park in Madrid and do our reading there. So we did. It was really cool. I had a lot of fun and actually got some reading done. I was impressed with myself. But to be honest, it was only because I left the group and went off alone. Here's the view I had for an hour... I hear it is snowing a lot back home and I just want everyone to be very jealous of my awesome refreshing warm temperature.
We met up with the Crazy Cat Lady. I was ready for her mean throwing arm however and was on my toes to run. From there we went into the city center to get postres once again. When we got there they had them fresh and delicious. There were some more cool street performers. So, just so you all know, this guy is completely motionless with his hair and coat and tie pinned that way. I'll try to get a video up.
And it was overall awesome. From there I headed back home. I realize I have never shown that I live in a hobbit hole. Notice the Doorknob. The other thing is just a key hole.
