The Prado

So we went to the Prado and it was probobly the coolest thing ever. We all went over as a group and I was really tired from the night before so on the bus ride over I was a little sleepy. But we got there and of course Dr. Shumway's kids went straight for us. Their two boys Trevor and Aaron love Andrew and me. Sister Shumway told us we were fine to take them but we had to give them directly back to her because a few years ago there was confusion and some kids got left at the Prado. They really are the funniest kids ever. They have a daughter Sarah who is really cute and funny.
When we got in to the Prado it was really cool. There was a painting of "an apostle" that i really really liked. They had a lot of the famous works of "Velasquez" or something like that. I'm not really sure how to spell his name. I was just really impressed by it all. After we went through that exhibit we moved toward some other rooms that had a bunch of ancient Greek and Roman peices. Those were really impressive because many had been that way since before Christ and were still amazing. In reality they were just on the "camino" to the Goya exhibit.

People were slowly peeling off and by the time we actually got to Goya's works it was just Erin, Sarah, and me. We saw all the ones that he did towards the end of his life where he went crazy. Those were really neat. After those we headed to his central display. The 2nd and 3rd of May. When we finally went into the room however they were no where to be seen. I asked the guard and found out that they are being restored till the 15th of April. I am so glad that I am sticking around here with my dad because I really am excited to see those. Being a little sad that they weren't there we headed over to Las Tres Meninas. There were a lot of the Zubies there. (Although few of the people on the trip are actually very zubyish. Everyone is actually really cool.) Erin decided it was her lunch time as did everyone else so they left me alone and I wandered towareds the supposed Rembrandt exhibit but there was only one of his pieces and it wasn't all that famous. But that is ok because there are tons of other WAY cool paintings.

I found Andrew when we planned to meet to head home and there was a group of 5 or so of us outside waiting to go back to Alcala. We decided to go and get "postres" at the "Puerta del Sol". They were really really good and then we finally headed back home. On the way over we saw a pretty cool looking bar and Andrew wanted a picture of it.
On the bus ride was another awesome Mullet.

Life Goes On

Where to begin? You all know how much I hate the internet. Ok, i guess not all of you but those who were with me on emails over the 2 years know. Anyways, I have been meaning to get this up for a while but technical difficulties have occured. Lets keep truckin.

When we last looked in on our hero he had been in Madrid for the first time ever and definately fell in love with it. The next day was pretty chill. Here we are studying. That is Laika. She's a really fun dog.
We went to the mall and shopped around. There was a midget door and I wanted to take a picture but no one would do it with me. I got this one instead. It was pretty nifty.
That night we went to the Discoteca for the first time. It was crazy and smelled of smoke and alcohol but got more fun towards the end. We went to a 2nd after an hour of the first and it was all Americans. Kinda a waste but still fun.

The next day we had our very first Madrid Walk. It was on architecture. Really neat cause that is my favorite thing. I really want to live somewhere like this when I grow up. Somewhere where the buildings have culture.
We were in a huge group and Erin had a copy of the homework so we dicided to split into two groups, as one went on we stayed behind and by coincidence the same five stayed behind. We decided that we'd chill at the Prado for a bit while the other group went on ahead. We saw a gay couple and so I sneakily took a picture of Erin with them in the background. They got pretty far away and are on the leftish side with the bike.
So Goya is my favorite artist and so I had to get a pic with his statue outside the Prado while we waited. I am really glad that I got that job at the MOA because it really opened my eyes to art and such. I've always liked it but now I can appreciate it more.
That was the Prado.
Right behind there there was a really cool church. Note the artistic moon in the background. I felt impressed with myself.
Here we had an Arthur moment... Then we were off to the walk. I felt oddly reminded of Monty Python. The city is just plain awesome. I'm going to build my house exactly like this when I'm filthy rich.
But seriously though. We walked around but we didn't have a very good list of where we were supposed to go and we didn't really understand it anyways but we sure had a lot of fun and took a lot of pictures. Here are some old people of Spain. Who remembers when I yelled out that i hate old people at a tennis match? That's changed here in Spain. They are so funny looking and in thier own little world. This guy the awesomest mullet I have ever seen. He is the one selling lottery tickets in the puffy coat. They have convinced me that I need to get one while I'm here. When in Rome... So I will when the time finally comes to cut my locks. I'm excited.
So this was a really famous building and then McDonalds came and bought it and ruined it.That is a pretty crazy smile. For this picture I had to set my Camera down with the timer. It was really nervous but ready to run and beat anyone down.Isn't that just Awesome? So, all in all I am pretty happy with that class. I have to write a two page paper today about my insights of the walk but it was pretty much a really fun "class".

Madrid Trip #1

So yesterday(the 15th) we went into Madrid for the first time. It was FREAKING awesome. Here we are at the Plaza del Sol. It was pretty cool. We all met in alcala at the train station but when we got to Madrid we decided to split up so the rest of the group left the subway at a different exit and we decided to head away from the plaza and then come back when all the rest of the people were gone.

-Side note: It is really weird to think that I'm not a missionary. The four of us are really weired out by it because for some reason we are all associating this experience with the mission. Yesterday for the first time in the morning my roommate had class and I didn't so i stayed at home alone. It was crazy. When we entered Madrid, Andrew once again split off from me and I think it finally sunk in that I'm allowed to split off from my companion. So, Garrett, I, Amy, Erin, and Callie decided to explore.

The first couple of minutes we were so amazed by all the cool architecture and and the cool looking alleys that we stoped at each one to take a picture.
Here is a cool looking hat that i would have bought but it was so small that even my ears were showing through.

Anyways...we went to the opera...
Some people are better at timed "Zoolander Jumps" than others.
We knew that we wanted to see the Plaza but we really didnt want to just go back the way we came so we checked out a map and decided that we'd loop around a bit and head towards the Plaza from a different direction. There were a couple of streets that looked pretty cool and we saw some gateway that caught my interest. Out of nowhere, we turned a corner and realized we were in Fanghorn forest and being attacked by an Ent.
It was pretty much the awesomest part of the day. All the other groups tried to say that they had had a "funner" time but we cited our ent sighting and trumped them all. As it turns out, Fanghorn is actually part of the Plaza mayor.

Its the big plaza i guess. I don't remember anything super about it now. I'm excited to come back and sight see when i actually know all about these places.

From there we were walking and i noticed some beggars outside of a really ornate door. Everyone was rushing past but I paused to look up and saw a really amazing church. The cathedral of Santa Lucia. It was really awesome inside in the literal ancient sense of the word. However, Garrett made a good comment that even though you would walk in and be in awe from the beautiful architecture and stain glass and wood carvings, the feel is nothing compared to that of the temple. Once again i realized how true our church was and how much these people need it.
So...from there we decided it was about time to find the Plaza del Sol. We had a small idea of where we were going but not much of one. After asking a few people we realized that we had really been really close when we started but we thought that because we got out of a different subway exit that we were futher away. We all tried to remember something we had read about the Plaza and the cafes but no one could remember much until we saw a really busy street and remembered them talking about it. We went down and saw a mariacha band. I have no idea if that is spelled at all correctly.

We all really wanted hot chocolate because we were all pretty cold and tired and wanted to sit in a cafe and have a "spanish experience". After 45 minutes of trying to find one and failing we almost decided on a starbucks until we saw a small coffee shop next door. I decided I'd get a cocoa drink and some cookies but after an hour of serious serching for a "quaint cafe" Amy and Callie decided to go into the starbucks afterall. I laughed on the inside. We all came back into the coffee shop and did have that experience afterall. We sat and talked for another 45 minutes or so and then headed back to Alcala. It was SO much fun.

The Tour Pics

This is me and my roomie at lunch with our large salt shaker.
I brought a few extra coats because I'm sick and it was cold when i left the house but it wasn't that cold so I took them off and later offered them to these girls. So we snapped a shot of us modeling them.

Here is me and the Don.
This is a pretty artzy shot that someone took but I really like it.
Andrew and I
Once again (Well, this was actually taken prior because stupid blogspot adds uploaded pictures to the top instead of in order to the bottom.) a picture of them with the coolest jackets in Spain. Katie, I know you are jealous of her wearing my green jacket but...
We don't look like tourist at all...
